The spate of ATM ram raids shows no sign of decreasing. Last week, in the early hours of Monday morning, a gang reversed a van through the glass doors of a St George Bank branch on a main road through Hurstville in Sydney's south. The men used the van to knock the ATM off its floor mountings and fled in a stolen luxury car. In yet another incident, thieves tore an ATM from a wall but lost all the money when it caught fire. The machine overheated as it was dragged along the road.
So far the ATM heists have been confined to NSW. Sydney has always been ahead of the rest of the country in the number of hold- ups, murders and drug-related crime. The spate of ATM ram raids may be setting the trend for other capitals.
* August 17: Hurstville. 2.20am. Thieves ram a Toyota Lexcen into a shopping centre. The men, wearing balaclavas, load an ATM into a Mazda van. Burned-out van with empty ATM inside later found.

[Rose Marie Villanueva-Austin] died on Sunday after a sick, sleepless night during which Austin says she treated her with doses of the painkiller Dymadon. She claims she gave the child a dose of medicine out of the Dimetapp bottle at about 3am, then sent Rose back to bed.
Desperate to get off methadone, Austin claims she had over a period of months been weaning herself off the drug by collecting her takeaways from the chemist twice a week and taking only a small amount. The rest was being stored in order, she says, to help her get off the drug altogether and to save the $77 a fortnight in prescription costs. Some of that methadone was stored by King in the Dimetapp bottle on the fridge, Austin alleges.
Sergeant [Terry James] also tendered evidence yesterday from a phone conversation between the pair, obtained by a listening device placed in their home between September 20 and 22, in which Austin allegedly asked King how the two bottles could have been mixed up. "How could you put methadone in a Dimetapp bottle. They look the same, you dumb shit," Austin said.

Petrol consumption slowed 4.8 per cent in the past two weeks, after falling 2 to 6 per cent in the first week of September. Around the country, prices yesterday were relatively steady at an average 132c a litre. Only Adelaide reported a significant jump -- more than 3c a litre to 133.7c.
The summit, convened by NSW motoring body the NRMA, called on the Howard Government to direct the consumer watchdog to monitor petrol prices, and demanded ethanol-blended petrol, biodiesel and LPG to be made available in a proportion of service station bowsers.
NRMA Motoring president Alan Evans said oil companies had ignored an invitation to attend the summit because they could not justify the price hikes. "They didn't want to come out and say `we have taken this opportunity to make extra profits'," Mr Evans said. "When you look at the data there has been a remarkable three-fold increase in the refining margins for no apparent reason."

Hurricane Rita is building off the Florida coast with experts predicting that by Friday it could be as powerful as Katrina, which flattened New Orleans three weeks ago.
Crude oil prices rose 1.9 per cent to $US67.48 a barrel as oil companies shut rigs in Rita's path.
Mr [John Howard], who originally described the summit as pointless, reversed his stance yesterday and is sending Assistant Treasurer Mal Brough as an observer.
