Teachers unions in NSW, Victoria and Western Australia plan the first co-ordinated interstate walkout on September 17, blaming frustrated pay claims and state governments ignoring demands for smaller class sizes and better conditions.
NSW teachers yesterday voted overwhelmingly to strike after the Carr Government offered a "miserable" 6 per cent pay rise in response to their 25 per cent pay claim.
NSW Education Minister Andrew Refshauge said the Government did not support strike action.

Ms [Maree O'Halloran] said members were also reporting increased incidents of abuse and violence from a small number of students, and she would be using the stopwork meeting to call for a "violence audit" of all schools.
Deputy Director-General for Schools in the NSW Department of Education, Alan Laughlin, said parents should check with their children's schools if there was any doubt about what supervision would be provided.
Both the NSW Government and the Opposition refused to comment on the strike.

COMPENSATION is all it would take for Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin to avoid having to return to Australia to face charges of malicious injury to property after an incident at Byron Bay on the weekend.
Coldplay will perform a third concert in Sydney tonight before leaving for Auckland for one concert and then on to Japan, Thailand and back to Britain.

"We love this festival, it is f...ing great," he said. The set ended with a rendition of What A Wonderful World. Gwyneth Paltrow was in attendance, watching the band's performance from the side of the stage, singing and dancing.
