An ambulance spokeswoman described the scene at Towradgi, a suburb of Wollongong, as "a battlefield". An 80-year-old man was seriously injured after being blown off his roof and was flown to Sydney by helicopter.
Among the worst-hit Sydney suburbs were Botany Bay in the south, Randwick in the east and Mosman on the north shore, where a man was taken to hospital with head injuries. A 12-year-old boy was also taken to hospital after being trapped under a tree for more than half an hour in Sydney's south.
NSW SES spokesman Peter O'Neill said the the winds had caused significant damage from Wollongong to Newcastle, and as far inland as Bathurst, in thecentral west of the state, where a three-year- old boy suffered a fractured skull when a tree fell on his cubbyhouse.

Mr [Lloyd Penrice] again went to Maroubra police station yesterday morning where he spoke to detectives. He was subsequently charged with affray, maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm in company and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company.

"A lot who knew the boys will be satisfied that he is being executed, in the same way he executed their teammates." The six Coogee Dolphins who died were Josh Iliffe, Shane Foley, Clint Thompson, Adam Howard, David Mavroudis and Gerard Yeo.

IMMIGRATION Minister Philip Ruddock travelled to Sydney's Muslim heartland last night to meet its spiritual leader following concerns extremist Islamic speakers were visiting Australia.
[Sheikh Hilaly] also said new ASIO laws allowing for the detention and interrogation of people discriminated against and victimised Muslims. He had expressed his concerns to Canberra, warning that the powers would wrongly fuel suspicions about Muslims and drive a wedge through the community.
